Caroline’s original name was Trine (or Thrine) Stoltz. She was born in Holbaek, Denmark on August 11, 1862. "Caroline" is on her tombstone. (Perhaps she chose to use Caroline as a more American name or perhaps it was her middle name.) Her father was * Ferdinand Stoltz, but he died in Denmark when she was only six. She had a full sister Mary. Their mother was Ane Marie (Nielson). After Ferdinand died Ane Marie married Christen Petersen later that same year (in Denmark). Her half brother Frank [Hansen] was born to Christen and Ane Marie shortly after. His given name was actually Lars Ferdinand Petersen, likely in honor of Ane Marie’s deceased first husband.
* Note some research from Gail Wieman (great granddaughter of Carrie) discovered the Stoltze family had immigrated to Denmark from Mecklenburg, Germany in the 1700s.
Caroline immigrated to the US in May 1872 at the age of nine with her stepfather Christen Peterson, and mother Ane, along her eleven-year-old full sister Karen (Mary) and their 2-year-old half brother Ferdinand (Frank Hansen.) Very soon after their arrival, Carrie’s mother Ane then died. Her stepfather Christen acted quickly. The children were all young and he put them into local foster homes. He then remarried in October 1972 (within 5 months of their arrival) to Willasine “Sena” Mathiasen. (It’s not likely Christen and Sena they had previously known each other since they were from completely different areas in Denmark.)
It must have been difficult for Carrie (and her full sister Mary) since their original father died when she was six and their mother died very soon after their arrival in the US. Then as a ten year old, she’s placed in foster care, (perhaps as a servant girl.) Perhaps her life held sadness for Carrie given all the loss she experienced as a child.
Carrie’s half brother Frank lived with a family by the name of Hansen and had a very good home which he later inherited. We don’t know who cared for her younger sister Mary when she was young, [but she somehow ended up living in Onekama Michigan.] Although the three siblings were separated in their childhood, they remained close, as they grew older.
Christen and Sena then moved and settled in Michigan on a farm in Arcadia Township. [It’s not clear why Peter and Sena settled in Arcadia Michigan, when Christen’s ’s three children from his first marriage were all still in Wisconsin.] Christen and Sena had two children, named Jennie and George. [Some of Jennie and George’s children are living in Arcadia Michigan at the present time [1979 date of this recounting.] Christen was a religious man and a lay minister at the small Danish church, which was established, near his home. This was the church attended when they moved from Wisconsin to Michigan. Grandpa Peterson (as he was known) was said to have quite a temper, and he would beat his team of horses. This was a sore point between father and daughter Caroline.
Chrest and Caroline were married on November 7, 1882. Carrie’s brother Frank Hansen was one of the witnesses.

Carrie's husband Chrest died suddenly on April 15, 1917. In 1918, Currie went to Detroit to work and Caroline lived with Edna and the boys Forrest and Leonard. In 1919 Caroline went back to her own home and Forrest stayed with her. [Recall Currie and Edna were husband and wife, but it’s not clear if Edna and their sons accompanied Currie to Detroit. Also Forrest would have been only about 9 the year Caroline moved back to her home it’s not clear the extent of his role. Also, does the referral to her “home” mean the original farmhouse?]
Caroline, never a robust person, in later years developed pernicious anemia. She doctored for this but didn’t receive much help, as this was a time before modern research on the disease. At one time she went to Ann Arbor university hospital. She went on a train, along with no one to help her find her way. She entered the hospital and they gave her medications but the anemia has progressed too far. On March 29, 1920, she died at 58 years. Of very religious nature, always kind hearted and thoughtful, she too was of strong pioneer stock, working and making decisions that helped mold the character of her family.
She and Chrest are buried side by side in the Onekama Village Cemetery, adjoining the plot where Currie and Edna (Forrest’s parents) are buried.
